Top candidates for mayoral position on the capital Kathmandu

Every time in the local election people are heated up to choose their best benefactor. This time too the election 2022 is a pretty heated topic among people. As Kathmandu is the heart of Nepal, people from every region keep a keen eye on the candidates that are fighting for the top position of mayor. Are you also excited to know about the candidates for mayor in Kathmandu and their promises? This year there are 56 candidates for the position of mayor among them 21 are from political parties, 35 are independent and 8 are womens. Whom are you gonna vote for? 1. Balendra Shah(Balen)- independent

Balen Shah is the most hyped contestant for mayor position, who is an structural engineer and a rapper with the strong devotion and motivation to change the system in kathmandu. His candidacy has given a ray of hope to many people for change. Young people mainly do not involve themselves in politics or get older holding the party’s hoards and for a huge change Balen shah is an independent candidate with a lot of vision and honesty which are believable and trustworthy. As a newcomer, he doesn’t criticize his opponents, remains calm and undeterred in front of all the discouraging and insulting comments. Either balen will win or lose. He has got a lot of support. He is the ray of hope for people who want to get rid of the party's hoards and develop the nation with their own efforts. Balen’s manifesto is based more on “how we do” where others are focused on “what we do”.

2. Keshav Sthapit- CPN UML

Keshav sthapit is also one of the promising candidates for mayor. He helds years of experience as well as the position of mayor twice. This time CPN UML has announced the candidacy for mayor post in Keshav Sthapit’s name.He makes some bold decisions which sometimes creates controversy. He is mostly remembered for taking the initiative to address encroachment of Maitighar Mandala and Pashupatinath temple area. But he is also famous for his controversial decision to allow private companies to put hoarding boards. He has also let squatters settle in the bank of Bagmati. Despite being a candidate for mayor he is considered as insensitive and misogynistic due to his statement at the interview he had with a female journalist.

3. Srijana singh- Nepali Congress

This time Nepali congress has given the candidacy to Srijana singh, who is also considered as probable candidate in this election 2079. She is the wife of a prominent congress leader Prakash Man Singh (son of Ganesh Man singh). She has a political history too. She won the free students union election defeating Pampha Bhusal(now a CPN maoist leader and federal minister) to become the treasure of the free student union at Sankardev Campus. She has stated in her manifesto that she will make Kathmandu a corruption free city and talked about women safety which seems to be quite promising.

4. Madan Das Shrestha- Rastriya Prajatantra party

This time RPP has given the candidacy chance to the veteran actor and a popular social worker/activist Madan Das Shrestha. He has a very successful career in acting and has made his name in social work until he was given the candidacy of mayor. He doesn’t have any political background and has a spotless character which is a plus point but he lacks the political experience and he isn’t a very fluent speaker. He is remembered for initiation of road expansion and sewage management works in the Dillibazar area at his own expense. He defines his candidacy for mayor position as just for the purpose of serving people and to end corruption inside the city. Being an honest leader which is quite decent but still having no clear electoral agenda can be quite disadvantageous too.

5. Samikshya Baskota- Bibeksheel Sanjha Party

A successful lawyer and a business person, Samikshya Baskota is given the candidacy of mayor from Bibeksheel Sanjha Party this time. She has a quite confident and eloquent personality. Legally sound and filled with ideas on how local units can better perform but still Losing provincial assembly election from Kathmandu-1 (A) and barely meeting people has been her major disadvantage. She seems like a moral personality as she stood against family politics (her father was a home state minister from Nepali Congress). She has clear agendas and is an appealing speaker with an attractive personality which is quite promising. Her attitude of not giving up even after losing once is quite admirable.
